Shopify upsells and cross-sells

Grow the order
without getting in its way.

An upsell works when it makes the purchase more useful. Choose the product relationship first, then decide where and when to show it.

Relevance first. Margin second. Placement third.

Six useful offer types

Start with the customer need, not the widget.

Several formats can raise order value. They solve different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.

01

Upgrade

Move the shopper from the original choice to a larger size, higher tier, premium material, or more capable model.

02

Cross-sell or add-on

Add a compatible item that completes the original purchase, such as a case, refill, cable, gift wrap, or protection.

03

Quantity break

Reduce the unit price when the shopper buys more. This fits consumables and products people naturally need in multiples.

04

Bundle

Sell a fixed set, multipack, or mix-and-match kit as one clear solution. The value can come from curation, price, or both.

05

Threshold reward

Offer free shipping, a gift, or a discount after the cart reaches a visible spend level. Show the remaining gap clearly.

06

Post-purchase offer

Present one related item after payment. A downsell can follow a declined offer with a smaller product, quantity, or price commitment.

Map the purchase journey

The right offer changes with the moment.

Each placement has a different job. Earlier offers help shoppers shape the basket. Later offers should need less thought and create less risk for the purchase already in progress.

Shopify notes that some checkout-page app blocks are available only on Shopify Plus. Post-purchase offers can also be unavailable for accelerated payments, subscriptions, duties, multi-currency orders, and some alternative payment methods. Check eligibility before you build a campaign around that placement.

Design the offer

Make the product relationship obvious.

A recommendation should explain itself. If the shopper needs a paragraph to understand why two products belong together, the relationship is probably too weak.

  1. 1

Anchor the offer to a product or cart condition

Use the selected product, variant, quantity, customer type, or cart value to decide whether the offer is relevant.

  2. 2

Explain the benefit in one line

State the practical relationship: completes the setup, lasts longer, lowers the unit price, or reaches a useful threshold.

  3. 3

    Keep the choice narrow

Show one strong recommendation or a short set of compatible options. Another catalogue grid adds work.

  4. 4

    Show the full price effect

Display the added price, discount, quantity, and updated total before the shopper accepts.

  5. 5

    Preserve control

Accepting, declining, changing quantity, and removing an item should all be easy on mobile and desktop.

  6. 6

    Test fulfilment and returns

Confirm inventory, discount allocation, order records, fulfilment, exchanges, and refunds before launch.

Read the result correctly

More revenue does not always mean a better offer.

An offer can raise average order value while reducing checkout completion, consuming margin, or creating more returns. Judge the complete order outcome.

01

Attach rate

Orders that accept an offer divided by orders that see it.

02

Offer conversion

Accepted offers divided by eligible offer views.

03

Profit per order

Order revenue minus product, discount, fulfilment, payment, and app costs.

04

Checkout conversion

Completed checkouts divided by checkout starts. Watch for declines after adding an offer.

05

Returns and cancellations

Compare orders with an accepted offer against ordinary orders.

Common failure

Too many offers compete with the purchase.

A product widget, popup, cart drawer carousel, shipping goal, checkout block, and post-purchase funnel can each look reasonable alone. Together they can turn one order into a sequence of sales interruptions.

Practical recommendation

Launch one relationship in one placement.

Start with a high-volume product and one obvious upgrade or companion. Measure the whole order for a full buying cycle, then improve the offer before adding another placement.

A simple starting sequence

Relationship, placement, economics, test.

Choose what makes the order better. Put it where that choice needs the least explanation. Check the margin, then test the complete purchase and fulfilment path.
